Diamond Peak, Cascade Mountains, Oregon Diamond Peak stands above the Willamette Pass area of Oregon about 50 miles southwest of Bend. It's a little farther west than the other peaks in the Cascade Range which accounts for high snowfalls and a few glacial remnants near the peak. The summit was carved by glaciers and has many cirques. Pinnacled lava ridges connect the peaks. The glaciers left behind dozens of lakes around this peak as well. Diamond Peak is a shield volcano unlike most of the other big Cascade peaks like Hood or Rainier which are stratovolcanoes.

Bristlecone Pines, Wheeler Peak, Great Basin National Park, Nevada Bristlecone Pine (Pinus longaeva), is among the longest-lived life forms on Earth. The oldest Pinus longaeva is more than 5,000 years old. Bristlecones thrive where most other plants cannot grow, such as in rocky dolomitic soils in areas with virtually no rainfall. This particular tree may well be 4,000 years old. Wheeler Peak with a summit elevation of 13,065 feet is the second-highest peak in Nevada.

December 10, 2015 - The two photographs below are both from Sparks Lake, Oregon, last summer. Each of these two photographs are made from 4 different exposures of the same image. The combined image then contains information from a wider range of tonal values than is possible with a single photograph, solving one of the big problems with photography; allowing exposure for detail in both shadows and highlights, at the same time! This is called HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography.
